Sen. Cayetano says Filipinos ‘fed up’ with corruption, urges repentance and reforms

MANILA — “Pagod, na pagod, na pagod, na pagod na.”

That was how Senator Alan Peter Cayetano described the frustration of Filipinos over recurring corruption cases.

In his Facebook livestream on Monday (Sept. 1), Cayetano said corruption is like a “lagnat” or fever that only gets noticed when it spikes.

“Akala natin na-solve na ‘yan noong panahon ni ganito. Next admin, ganito naman. So parang, ‘Wala ba itong katapusan?’” he said.

“Kung hindi pumutok ito, baka walang pagbabago,” the senator added.

As an example, Cayetano again raised what he called double appropriations in the DPWH budget, an issue he said he has been pointing out for three years.

“Sa hearing ng Blue Ribbon Committee, pinakita ko na taun-taon may double appropriation…. Tatlong taon po [akong nagsasalita], walang nakikinig,” he said.

Cayetano said breaking this vicious “cycle” requires addressing the root of the problem.

“Ang crisis natin ngayon really is a crisis of values, of character, of who we are as a people,” he said.

Addressing both leaders and ordinary Filipinos, the senator stressed that any apology should be coupled with a “180-degree turn” from old ways.

“Kung ang sorry ay ‘Sorry, nahuli kami,’ that’s not enough,” he said. “Y’ung repentance that leads to reformation and reforms should be there.” (UnliNews Online)
