PILI, Camarines Sur — Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Vince Dizon said years of fragmented or “piecemeal” funding under past administrations led to the deteriorating condition of major highways in the Bicol Region.
Dizon cited the Quirino Highway from Quezon Province to Camarines Norte, the Andaya Highway in Camarines Sur, and the Maharlika Highway in Albay as among those affected by repeated patchwork repairs caused by limited, section-by-section funding.
He added that President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. is aware of the long-standing issue.
“We have to fix it the right way,” Dizon said, stressing the need for full-scale and long-term road rehabilitation.
The DPWH chief made the statement during a press conference following a road inspection trip from Quezon Province, attended by Camarines Sur Gov. LRay Villafuerte and district representatives Tsuyoshi Horibata, Luigi Villafuerte, and Migz Villafuerte.
