BDO supports Bohol-based company in advancing sustainable water solutions

WATER scarcity is a pressing issue for Bohol residents as many communities face limited access to potable and steady water. Bohol island has to depend on groundwater sources or water sourced underground, which has led to saltwater intrusion and contamination, endangering public health and contributing to the spread of waterborne illnesses such as diarrhea.

To help address this concern, BDO Unibank Inc. (BDO) provided financial support to Richli Water, a local water utility in Tagbilaran City with the mission to deliver safe and sustainable water to the people of Bohol.

Unlike conventional groundwater-dependent utilities, Richli Water sources its supply from surface water systems, like rivers and springs, which helps protect underground natural resources and ensures a stable, and cleaner water supply. With BDO’s funding, Richli Water has been able to expand its pipeline network and construct a new water treatment facility, strengthening its capacity to meet growing water needs of Boholanos while preserving the environment.

Ralph Lim, President of Richli Water, emphasized the significance of this initiative, stating that “BDO’s loan has been a game changer for us. It has enabled us to build an extensive pipeline network that delivers safe water to households across Bohol. Sustainable methods often require significant investment, and BDO’s support has enabled us to meet the community’s growing water needs in an environmentally responsible manner.”

As part of its expansion plans, Richli Water will construct more water treatment facilities to address the water requirements of Bohol’s rapidly increasing population. The company is also exploring the development of wastewater treatment plants to provide comprehensive water solutions to more communities across the island.

Ensuring water quality is a top priority for Richli Water. The company conducts hourly tests at its water treatment plant to monitor turbidity, chlorine levels, and pH balance. Third-party tests are done twice yearly to comply with Department of Health (DOH) standards, ensuring that Boholanos receive high-quality water for daily use.

BDO’s commitment to sustainable development is at the core of this partnership. By providing essential funding to companies like Richli Water, BDO is helping uplift the lives of Filipinos while fostering sustainable growth. This initiative aligns with BDO’s long-term commitment to environmental stewardship and building a better future for all. (Manny D. Balbin)
