‘Butong Pakwan’ prank leads to stabbing in Pantabangan, suspect arrested

PANTABANGAN, Nueva Ecija — Swift response of police personnel here in a stabbing incident in Barangay Marikit, Pantabangan led to the arrest of a suspect, Sunday early morning (June 15).

According to a report submitted to P/Col. Ferdinand D. Germino, Provincial Director, NEPPO, the incident occurred around 5 a.m. and involved a 30-year-old farmer who sustained a serious head injury after being stabbed by a 37-year-old male, both residents of the area.

Initial police investigation revealed that the suspect and the victim were having a drinking spree at a wake when the victim jokingly threw a piece of butong pakwan (watermelon seed) at the suspect.

Offended by the act, the suspect got irritated and stabbed the victim in the head. The victim was immediately rushed to the Alfonso Castaneda Health Center, where he remains under medical observation.

Responding swiftly, elements of Pantabangan PS conducted a follow-up operation and successfully arrested the suspect.

The suspect will be facing charges of Frustrated Homicide.

Col. Germino said, “We encourage drinkers to always be calm and responsible, especially during social gatherings. What may seem like a harmless joke can quickly escalate into violence when under the influence of alcohol.” (UnliNews Online)
