NIA restores irrigation to 40,000 hectares benefiting farmers in Nueva Ecija

CABANATUAN CITY (PIA) — The National Irrigation Administration (NIA) has restored irrigation services to nearly 40,000 hectares of farmlands in Nueva Ecija following the completion and commissioning of the Talavera River Super Diversion Canal (SDC) Siphon.

This project restored irrigation supply to a total of 39,748.93 hectares, directly benefiting about 26,335 farmers across the province and supporting stable agricultural production.

NIA Administrator Eddie Guillen led the commissioning of the Talavera River SDC Siphon at the boundary of Barangays Ligaya and San Nicolas in Llanera town with representatives from national agencies, irrigators’ associations, and local government units present.

The rehabilitation was completed under the directive and close monitoring of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., who ordered the immediate repair and fast-tracking of works to promptly restore irrigation services to affected areas.

Guillen said the project reflects the results of clear government direction and focused support for the agriculture sector.

“Ang proyektong ito ay patunay na kapag malinaw ang direksyon ng pamahalaan at seryoso ang ating pagtutok sa sektor ng agrikultura, mabilis at konkreto ang resulta”.

The Talavera River SDC Siphon is a critical component of the irrigation network serving large portions of Nueva Ecija, widely known as the country’s rice granary.

Its rehabilitation and commissioning are expected to improve irrigation reliability, boost farm productivity, and support food security and farmers’ livelihoods in Nueva Ecija. (Maria Caroline A. Lopez)
