PRESIDENTIAL Task Force on Media Security (PTFoMS) Executive Director Paul M. Gutierrez (3rd from left), held a fruitful meeting with the head of the Public Attorney’s Office (PAO) Atty. Persida Acosta and Dr. Erwin Erfe, head of the PAO Forensic Laboratory Division, Manila on Tuesday (June 6).
The meeting resulted to the PAO agreeing to handle all libel cases filed against members of the press. Herself a respected columnist and media personality for many years now, Acosta is fully aware of the plight of many media practitioners, especially in the provinces, who need legal assistance and guidance when confronted with libel cases.
A memorandum between the PTFoMS and PAO is to be signed soon to finalize the agreement.
Acosta also expressed full support to the PTFoMS’ program of conducting a series of ‘awareness campaigns’ among the members of the press nationwide aimed at reminding them of how to take precautionary measures while in the performance of their duties as news gatherers and truth disseminators, promote responsible journalism, respect for the rule of law and how to avoid libel cases.
